How to Use Facebook Covers

The new Facebook Timeline can take any image from your Facebook albums or uploaded from your computer. However many images don't fit well into the new timeline layout.

The top image of your timeline is called a Facebook Cover.  The cover images are always exactly 850x320 pixels.  If your image is any other dimension, Facebook will automatically resize it as follows:

  • Images wider than 850 pixels will be reduced to 850 pixels wide.
  • Images taller than 320 will be cropped to 320 pixels tall.  You can re-position the photo vertically to show the best part of your image.
  • Images smaller than 850x320 will be stretched to fill the space.  Images stretched, even a little will become distorted or grainy.
  • Large images will reduce well, but may be cropped.
For this reason, we recommend creating images specifically for your Facebook Cover that are exactly 850x320 pixels.  Because not everyone has the software, skill or desire to make these specialty images, we've made these for you.

How to use our Facebook Cover Images

To view an image, simply click it.  In most browsers it will appear full size.

To download an image, right-click and choose "save image as" and save it to the hard drive of your computer or tablet.

To install the image to your Facebook Cover, go to your Facebook profile page. (You must be signed in to Facebook.)  Then do the following:

  1. Hovering over the top image, a box will appear in the lower right corner that says "change cover".  Click this.
  2. From here you can either select an image from any of your Facebook albums, or upload an image from your computer.  For your first Facebook Cover, we recommend uploading one of our images.
  3. Click choose files.  Find the folder on your computer where you downloaded our image.  Click OK.
Your image should appear at the top.

Once you have created your first cover, you will have a new album on Facebook called Facebook Covers.  You can use these over again without uploading the image again.  Swap your favorites frequently.

Note in the bottom left hand corner your profile picture is still visible.  These two images overlap slightly.

Get creative!

Many of our images are designed for you to edit them.  You can take one of the images, use it as a background and add your own text or photos using software like Photoshop.  This takes some practice, but it's fun to do.  We will be publishing a tutorial on how to use Photoshop for Facebook covers soon.

Your profile image and Facebook Cover, since they overlap, can allow for some creative designs.  Upload a square Facebook profile pic, with your hands raised high, then overlap it with a picture of an elephant for example.  Positioned correctly, you can even sit on your own head.

Contribute your best stuff to our library, if you wish.

The rules:

All of these images are free to use unless specifically noted.  You may modify them for your personal use.  We don't require credit, but it would be nice.

You may not resell them, and may not resell modified variations of them.  You may not add your own domain name or use these images for other advertising.

You may not add the images to any commercial collection.

You may republish a maximum of 25 images.  These may not be downloaded by automated software.

Images may contain fair-use samples of copyrighted works, such as snipets of a  song lyric or poem.  However you may not use the entire song, poem, or photograph of a copyrighted work in its entirety.
