Creating a custom cover images for your new Facebook timeline is relatively easy. In fact, any image will work, however some look better than others.
The Facebook profile header graphic measures 850x320 pixels. Images smaller will be stretched, and will appear distorted. Images larger will be reduced automatically to 850 pixels wide. They will not be distorted, however you may have to crop portions of the image.
My recommendation is to create a graphic that is exactly 850 x 320 pixels or larger, maintaining the same proportions.
Additionally you want to remember that a small portion of your graphic, in the lower left hand corner will be covered by your profile image. While this can be inconvenient, it also gives you unique opportunities for creativity.
